COURSE CONTENT (SUBJECT TO VARIATION)
MORNING
9.30-10.00 Arrival. Coffee/ tea etc available.
10.00 Session one: Introduction and initial writing. The first session will focus on the power of objects to evoke memory and define characters. Examples will be provided but you’re welcome to bring your own objects if you’d like. Please bring something in that tells us about you and which you can talk about.
11.15 Break for coffee/tea etc
11.30 How to Create Convincing Characters. This session will look at how to move away from stereotypes and present characters who will stay in the mind long after the story is finished. It will involve some brief writing exercises.
AFTERNOON
12.45 – 1.30 pm: Lunch A buffet style lunch will be available. There will be time to chat, write some more or just enjoy the local scenery. We will also use the time to feed back to you on the pieces you have sent us, if you have opted for this.
1.30- 2.45: A Sense of Place. This session will look at how established writers evoke place by looking at examples from both prose and poetry. We will then experiment with creating our own settings in prose form.
2.45-3.00: Break for tea/coffee etc
3-4 pm: Plot. We will look at a well-known plot model then consider how to put this into practice in our own writing.
4.00- 4.30 Questions and further discussion.
